Baseball: How To Increase Your Pitch Velocity

Pitching a baseball might seem a simple skill. However, doing it requires proper techniques if you really want to increase the power of your throw. Whether you play baseball for fun or at a competitive level, building strength and mastering technique are key to start increasing your pitch velocity.

1. Use proper finger positioning

You need to keep your full motion force behind the ball during your pitch. Part of this involves properly positioning your fingers during the pitch. Follow these guidelines:

  • Keep fingers behind the ball at all times. Avoid curling your hand or fingers in front of or to the side of the ball as you throw it.
  • Balance the ball using your thumb on the front with your index and middle finger placed behind the ball.
  • Make sure your fingers are placed across the horseshoe stitching, running parallel with it.

Build consistency

Even though you have adequate strength, you won’t be able to increase your pitching velocity without consistent practice. What you need is to develop muscle memory to fully utilize your power. Try recording your training sessions and have a coach help you analyze your technique.
